About

Farmers Market is an Icelandic design company, founded in 2005 by designer Bergthora Gudnadottir and musician Joel Palsson.

The idea was to utilize one of the most organic materials available – the unique Icelandic wool, along with other raw natural materials such as silk and leather, to create a line of multifunctional clothing and accessories. Authentically styled, yet sophisticated and wearable, the clothing is suited for a wide range of occasions, outdoor activities as well as city life.

With close ties to the current Icelandic music and design scene, the Farmers Market design concept and inspiration draws from the roots – the Icelandic heritage where, for centuries, man and animals have cohabited in harmony challenged by harsh nature. The style has been described as revitalized Icelandic traditional design, combining Nordic design elements with chic modernity in lightweight apparel.

Farmers Market clothing and accessories are sold in selected shops in Europe, Japan, and US, including concept stores, fashion boutiques and at an occasional ski resort.

History

In Iceland, with a population of only 300,000, can look back a few hundred years to find common ancestors to every inhabitant, making the people of this rough northern island truly one big family. Moreover, the modern Icelander only has to look back two or three generations to discover a sheep-growing farmer in his line of genes. Historically, it is often clamed that without the hardy Icelandic sheep, providing meat, milk and wool, the isolated Icelandic human population would not have survived centuries of hardship and poverty.
